K.A.R.E. was organized several years ago when a group of environmentally conscious sixth graders, under the guidance of Mrs. Walsh, wanted to organize a recycling program at Bryan School. Since then, K.A.R.E. , now a fifth grade activity, has been active in promoting environmental issues and educating younger students about important ecological matters. In the past, K.A.R.E. members educated other students about alternative lunch containers, such as using thermos containers instead of juice drinks and avoiding disposable plastic utensils. K.A.R.E. will continue to focus on four major themes: recycling, a letter writing campaign, adopting an endangered animal, and a rain forest and plants project. Mrs. Looram is the advisor to the K.A.R.E group.
Don't throw it away! Teachers and students recycle writing paper, construction paper, cardboard, newspapers and magazines in special blue recycling bins. K.A.R.E. members collect the recyclable materials from each classroom on Mondays and Wednesdays.
K.A.R.E. members will write letters to government organizations and local business, inquiring what is being done to help the earth.
The manatee is an endangered animal because they swim close to the ocean's surface where they are easily hit by fast-moving boats. K.A.R.E. will adopt a manatee to help this endangered species.
For our last project in the 1997-1998 school year, K.A.R.E. members will be planting seedlings and learning about the rain forest.
