Community Service Projects

The Student Council members have been busy over the past few months with a variety of service projects to assist members of distant communities as well as helping members in our local community. One of the larger projects that the students were involved with was a collaborative project with the High School Interact group and the Merritt School Student Council. All the schoolsparticipated in a used toy and book drive for the victims of the 1997 floods in the upper Midwest. The drive was an overwhelming success and exhibited how cooperation with others can yield positive results. The Student Council would like to send their sincerest thanks to those who contributed the used toys and books.

While they are busy helping others in other areas, the Student Council also has worked locally to make a difference in people's lives. One of their most popular community service projects involves visits to Dunroven Nursing Home. When at Dunroven, Student Council members assisted the residents in making holiday ornaments and, more importantly, provided the residents with companionship and conversation. The Student Council is planning another trip soon. In addition, the Student Council has extended their nursing home visitations to include Anna House. They visited with the residents in October and hope to establish a relationship with Anna House so that more visitations could be planned in the future.

Finally, the Student Council has continued the tradition of collecting new toys in the Toys for Tots campaign and used coats in the Coats for Kids drive. The two drives concluded in December, and many contributions were received.

School Spirit Activities

All students in grades one through six are involved in various School Spirit Days, such as: Sports Day, World Series Day, Teacher Look-Alike Day, Mix-Match Day, Beach Day, and Bad Hair Day. Students celebrate "Red and White Day" on the first Friday of every month by wearing Bryan School's colors.

In addition to School Spirit Days, each class creates a special project to celebrate the 100th day of school in February. Student Council celebrates Black History Month and Women in History Month by holding schoolwide trivia games.

Student Council promotes a Read-a-Thon, sponsored by Hackensack Hospital. The "Children Helping Children" program encourages students to read and raise money for seriously ill children.
